Colorful, Baby-Safe Jewels for Moms
I've been on this jewelry stream of consciousness lately and found some unique companies that sell a variety of options for moms who want to wear baby-safe jewelry. With Mother's Day around the corner, I thought it appropriate to find something special. Three companies who approach the challenge in three ways: Little Gems, Teething Bling, and Dr. Bloom's Chewable Jewels. They all have one thing in common- they create colorful jewelry that, as a mom & designer, I love!
Teething Bling- You'd never guess this jewelry is made of Silicone when you see it! The idea is to make jewelry that is fashion inspired and safe for a baby to chew away at.
The Story:Kendra Laduca is the creator of these fabulous pieces and co-owner of the company Smart Mom. They offer over 16 color ways of pendants, keyrings, and bangles- all inspired by the colors we would find in "normal" jewelry. That way, you can pair your favorite earrings with a chewable pendant or bangles by Smart Mom. They're always looking to add colors to their line and the last two colors were voted in by clients. Their best sellers? Jade, Black Onyx, and Brown Snowflake (pictured above).
What I dig about Teething Bling: It's very fashion forward, made of phthalate-free, federally approved silicone, a portion of all proceeds go to charities (http://www.curesearch.org http://www.dressforsuccess.org), and they're available in fun colors that celebrities like Angela Bassett, Ming Na, and Mr. Big (Chris Noth) love as much as I do! Also, these are just as beautiful in person as they are online- color rendition is quite true & the scale is perfect.
Little Gems- They create handmade precious pieces of jewelry that are safe for a baby or child to explore and mom to wear.
The Story:According to Karen Blum Boateng, designer of the Little Gems line, color is very critical in her work. Her jewelry is safe for babies to explore and play with. She combines her sense of aesthetics as well as the gemstone properties to decide what her pieces will look like. Karen says her inspiration comes from nature and finding contrasting colors that "pop". You'll find stones like Amethyst, Aquamarine, Peridot, Red Carnelian, Pearl, and Lapis Lazuli in Little Gems. Since the Little Gems was born when Karen needed baby friendly jewelry for her and her daughter, you can be sure that each piece is made with great attention to detail and a dash of happiness.
What I dig about Little Gems:Little Gems strives to "make the world a better place." They maintain a Green Office Seal of Approval, which means it's run as a green business (recycled paper products, biodegradable packaging, and green energy runs the main website). The gems are considered low impact since they are never dyed, go through minimal processing, and Karen also supports fair trade with the Indian jewel miners she sources.
Dr. Bloom's Chewable Jewels: These jewels are the invention of Dr. Helen Bloom Smith, a dentist and mom.
The Story: While still in dental school, Dr. Helen Bloom Smith figured out that babies need better teething toy options. With safety as the key concern, she set out to create a healthy option for babies that would still be fun for the mom to wear.
What I dig about Dr. Bloom's: This baby safe jewelry is also made from phthalate-free, federally approved silicone and their line includes punchy colors and some unique shapes with angles that are surely fun for a baby to explore. They've just introduced several new colors like Deep Sea Blue and Amber Twilight that show just how connected to color they are.
I’m completely inspired by these mom friendly brands & can’t wait to try them myself (hint to my husband if he’s reading). What colorful ways to say Happy Mother's Day!
