Expression of Joy through Color
I came across this artistic endeavor by BMW am quite inspired by the balance of imagination, art, and precision. BMW has a long history of partnering with artists to create masterpieces on the body of a BMW. Since 1975, they've worked with Calder, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Stella and many others on cars in the past. BMW has posted a quick overview video here.
A birdseye view of the oversized canvas makes the Z4 look ant-like.
If you haven't seen it yet, see it here. The concept in the past was always rooted in an artist painting the car itself. The latest work with South African artist, Robin Rhode turned the car into the paintbrush! The wheels of a BMW Z4 were rigged to release paint using a remote control operated by Rhode. The art that would develop on the 100' x 200' canvas was a complete mystery.
The thrill of the drive as red paint is being dispensed from the front wheels.
This project motivates me to resurrect my artists brushes this weekend! Wile I'm digging those out of my storage boxes, though, I also found that BMW has created an iPhone app called An Expression of Joy that allows me to be the driver and create my own virtual art. See how it works here.
The Z4 is your own turbo paintbrush.
For me, it's all about the art and color. For my husband, it's all about the customized Z4 Roadster you can design using a 3-d configurator that's also a part of this app. This gives a whole new meaning to the term "joy ride!"
